Banks and investment firms have spent years competing for scarce analytical talent. Justin Nelson thinks many of them are overlooking an obvious source: neurodiverse candidates, including people on the autism spectrum.
Nelson is a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, where he heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team. The team oversees more than $15 billion in assets. From that vantage point, the JP Morgan leader has argued that the industry’s hiring habits leave capable people on the sidelines.
The Business Case
Financial services reward analytical rigor and attention to detail. Those are areas where many neurodiverse individuals stand out. Nelson notes that while they may find it harder to connect and communicate, they often have creative and computational talents beyond the norm.
The problem lies in how candidates are evaluated. Standard interviews emphasize conversation, and Justin Nelson JP Morgan says communication is typically the biggest hurdle for neurodiverse applicants. He describes ordinary exchanges as something most people barely think about. “Things that you and I probably take for granted, that makes it so easy for us to be having this conversation right here, it’s very hard for them.”
Low Cost, High Return
Justin Nelson outlines three adjustments. Firms can redesign interview processes so they measure ability rather than social ease. Managers can provide structured task assignments with a clear explanation of how each piece fits a larger plan. And companies can partner with specialized groups, such as Broad Futures, which helps employers educate themselves and select neurodiverse candidates.
These changes require minimal investment, yet they can widen a firm’s access to employees with distinctive cognitive strengths. Wealth management and financial analysis roles, in particular, could benefit from people who thrive on exact, rule-based work. Nelson has also supported Adelphi University’s Bridges Program, which serves high-functioning students on the spectrum.
For an industry short on skilled workers, the JP Morgan managing director’s advice offers a practical place to start. Read this article for more information.
