Rapamycin, commonly referred to as Sirolimus, is a medication that doctors use to prevent organ transplant rejection and in the treatment of some specific lung disease. Additionally, it is considered a cancer drug. Rapamycin was discovered in 1972 after being isolated from samples of the bacterium on Easter Island and was initially used as an anti-fungal agent. Later on, physicians discovered that the drug had incredible immunosuppressive and antiproliferative properties which made it useful in the treatment of several ailments. Mikhail Blagosklonny is one of the scientists who has taken an interest in Rapamycin drug. Rapamycin as compared to other immunosuppressive drugs used to prevent organ transplant has a lower toxic level towards the kidneys; hence, it is the best to use.

The above is a rare ailment that results from a combination of kidney failure, anemia, and low platelet count. Therefore, after a transplant is done, instead of using calcinerium inhibitors that may re-infect the new kidney, a patient can use Rapamycin instead.

Due to the antiproliferative properties of Rapamycin, it enhances the immune reaction of the human body towards tumors and also promotes tumor regression.

After conducting tests on mice, Dr. Mikhail has discovered that Rapamycin enhances the ability of such animals to handle tuberculosis. Initial studies on people show immunological rejuvenation after old patients were given a dose of the drug before getting an influenza vaccine. At the moment, it is not conclusive that the drug can increase an individual’s lifespan as more research is still being done.Additionally, Rapamycin can be used to treat Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), Coronary Stent Coating, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), and Facial Angiofibromas. Moreover, there are also other conditions that scientists believe the drug can treat; however, research on such is still in progress. These diseases include Alzheimer’s Muscular Dystrophy and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).Mikhail Blagosklonny is a prominent scientist, oncologist, a professor and a philanthropist who envisions a world where cancer is not only treatable but also affordable to many. In particular, Blagosklonny is interested in the relation between cancer and aging as the disease is more common in older persons of a specific age group. For this reason, Mikhail has conducted several studies that have been accepted in the oncology field and serve as a motivation to his peers and students who aim to explore more of this research in future. Dr. Blagosklonny plans on developing safer, efficient, and inexpensive ways to treat cancer different from the available ones that are excruciating and expensive. Furthermore, the scientist is researching on ways in which cancerous cells can be removed without interfering with the healthy cells that are needed to help the body recuperate after several months or years of cancer treatment.
