Highland Capital Management’s Initiative of Improving North Texas Communities

James Dondero, also known as Jim, is the co-founder and president of the Dallas-based investment adviser, Highland Capital Management. The firm is among the largest and most experienced investment managers that provide several financial services in the credit arena. Under Jim’s management, the firm services both domestic and international clients and manages more than $17 billion for pension plans, governments, endowment, foundations and even celebrities.

Besides managing the credit market, James Dondero takes a proactive management technique to charitable giving. Jim invests most of his giving to the local community. Highland Capital gives more than $3 million dollars to charity every year. The company is also expanding in its philanthropic activities across the Dallas community. As a result, the firm was in search of an associate to help manage Highland’s philanthropic budget. After a long search, Mr. Dondero found Mary Janonick, the chief executive officer and president of The Dallas Foundation and her team of donor service and philanthropic experts.

James Dondero remarked, “We selected The Dallas Foundation, an organization that was deeply ingrained in the North Texas community with a proven track record of achievement in the nonprofit community.” Mary and Jim appraised approaches for a charitable giving framework that will be effective, aspirational and valiant. The two managed to establish a subsidiary organization of The Dallas Organization, the Highland Dallas Foundation Inc.

After forming the foundation, Mr. Dondero later realized the need of hiring a committed professional to formulate the best way to give back while creating a huge impact. Jim hired Linda Owen, the former CEO of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. At the Dallas Foundation, Owen exclusively focuses on Highland Dallas Foundation’s, charitable giving. During the partnership, Jim remarked, “Linda’s experience, guidance, and relationships in the community will allow us to make an even greater impact in North Texas communities.”

Dondero is one of the pioneers of Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLOs) and formulating credit-oriented solutions for retail and institutional investors globally. Jim has worked in the equity and credit markets for more than 30 years mainly focusing on distressed and high yield investment. Additionally, Dondero sits on the Board of Directors for American Banknote and MGM Studios. He also chairs the Board for Cornerstone Healthcare, NexBank, and CCS Medical Corporation.
