George Soros Has Donated Billions Of Dollars Of His Own Money To Make The World A Better Place For Everyone
George Soros has long been the target of right-wing conspiracy nuts and Authoritarian governments for many years. The Atlantic recently decided to shine more light on the topic and brought a lot of intelligence and common sense to an otherwise scattered and speculative topic. The truth is, George Soros is very open about the changes he hopes to see in the world, and a lot of those changes have to do with making planet Earth a better place for minorities and those who can’t speak for themselves. But, instead of seeing Mr. Soros as someone who donates large sums of his own money for the better good of mankind, the political right has chosen to vilify and make him out to be some kind of evil puppet master who is supposedly secretly working to run the world.
George Soros has been one of, if not the, largest contributor to charitable causes in the last 20 years. His donation of $18 billion of his own money to the Open Society Foundations charity, which he created himself, has definitely put him at the top of the list for people who are working to make a positive change in the world. The problem has been that not everyone sees it this way, and instead of looking critically at the subject, many have taken to making wild accusations and attacking a man who is just looking to help. What’s even more baffling is the fact that a lot of the causes he donates to or supports are progressive and democratic causes that everyone should be supporting.
If you look back into history; however, this is nothing new. Like George Soros, philanthropists have always been a target for people’s paranoia, fears, and suspicions, and some of it comes from the way that people look at philanthropy. In the Enlightenment days, the word became associated with people who led or were a part of movements that looked to make radical changes that others were not crazy about. By the late 1800’s, the word philanthropy began to mean something more related to giving on a large-scale, and many industrial titans became known as philanthropists.
As George Soros, himself, has pointed out, there is a big problem when one group of people claim to have a patent on the only truth. In an article titled “The Capitalist Threat,” that Mr. Soros wrote for the Atlantic, he explained that the name of his charitable organization, Open Society Foundations, came from Karl Popper who wrote the book “The Open Society and Its Enemies.” In the book, Popper elucidated how an open society has always been the enemy of totalitarian ideologies and especially those who look to oppress and force their point of view on people. Karl Popper went on further in his book to explain that all people have differing views and that there should be institutions that protect people’s rights as well as their freedom to speak and choose their own lifestyles. Unfortunately, what’s happening in today’s world is exactly what Popper feared, and so George Soros feels that it is not only his responsibility but his duty do the best he can to help people to live a better life.
